Value Added Courses

In alignment with UGC guidelines and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Mahadevananda Mahavidyalaya offers a range of Value Added Courses (VAC) and skill-based short-term certificate programmes. These are designed to broaden students’ knowledge, sharpen employability skills and foster holistic personal development beyond the regular undergraduate curriculum.

About VAC

Value Added Courses are short-term, non-credit or credit-bearing programmes that run alongside the regular timetable. They enhance a student’s profile and employability. Certificates are issued by the college on successful completion.

Courses Currently Offered

Computer Applications & Basics of IT

Introduction to operating systems, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet usage, email and basic digital literacy. Suitable for students of all streams.

Environmental Awareness & Sustainability

Understanding environmental issues, climate change, conservation, sustainable practices and environmental laws — aligned with UGC’s compulsory ENVS paper.

Communicative English & Soft Skills

Developing spoken and written English, public speaking, group discussion, interview preparation and professional communication skills for the job market.

Yoga, Health & Wellness

Practical training in yoga postures, pranayama, meditation and mental wellness techniques to promote physical and psychological well-being among students.

First Aid & Basic Life Support

Hands-on training in basic first aid, CPR, emergency response and accident management — a life skill applicable in everyday situations.

Indian Constitution & Human Rights

An introduction to the Indian Constitution, Fundamental Rights and Duties, the legislative process, human rights frameworks and citizen responsibilities.

Financial Literacy & Entrepreneurship

Basic concepts of banking, personal finance, savings, investment, taxation and entrepreneurship — aimed at building economic awareness and self-reliance.

Art Appreciation & Cultural Heritage

Exploring Indian art, music, literature, folk traditions and cultural heritage — promoting sensitivity towards the rich diversity of Bengal’s cultural landscape.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Developing analytical reasoning, logical thinking, data interpretation and structured problem-solving approaches — essential for competitive examinations and professional life.

VAC under NEP 2020

Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the UGC’s Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF), Value Added Courses and Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) form a mandatory component of the undergraduate programme. Students at WBSU-affiliated colleges including Mahadevananda Mahavidyalaya must complete the prescribed VAC/SEC credits as part of their degree requirements.

VAC under WBSU’s NEP framework includes courses in Yoga (offered as VAC at Mahadevananda Mahavidyalaya), environmental studies and other skill-based modules integrated into the semester system.

Eligibility & Certification
  • All enrolled undergraduate students of the college are eligible
  • Courses are offered in afternoon sessions or on designated days as per the college routine
  • Minimum attendance of 75% is required to appear in the final assessment
  • A college-issued certificate is awarded on successful completion
  • Some courses carry credits under the CBCS/NEP framework
  • No separate fee is charged for most VAC programmes
