With the mission of spreading education among the poor and struggling sector of the society, Mahadevananda Mahavidyalaya was established by Swami Jyortirmayananda Giri Maharaj in 1968. The demographic pattern of the backward North 24 Parganas was also given due weightage at the time of establishment of the college. At present classes are held in three buildings (Main College Building, Annex Building and Rashtraguru Surendrananth Banerjee Campus), all located at Monirampore, Barrackpore about 3.6 kms away from Barrackpore Railway Station, West Bengal. Inspite of having three buildings, the college has infrastructural problems which hinders the expansion of education. Right now we have Honours course in forteen subjects and General course in nineteen subjects.

The advent of gloabalisation and its emergent issues demand serious attention of the policy makers and intellectuals. Competition has become keen. In order to meet the ever growing demand of quality education and accept global challenges the college has to maintain high standard of education. I believe that inspite of having limited resources, the college with the help of efficient and dedicated faculties and other supporting staff and other supporting staff continue to meet the demand of the students who come from different strata of the society and require constant support and guidance to finally move towards excellence, from darkness to light.
